About

Thank you for visiting, I hope you enjoy viewing the images as much as I did making them.

I'm based in Suffolk, living near to Ipswich, and tend to take most of my photos in the local area. I most often photograph the county at either the very early wee hours of the morning or at the end of the day, when the sun is low in the sky. Magic things can happen at those times, the light becomes very warm, the clouds often are lit from underneath rather than from on top which adds fantastic colours to the backgrounds, and the land looks completely different in long shadow. The real pleasure though, is in having a grandstand seat for whatever nature conjures up - even though it may have meant a 4am start from home. East Anglia is big on skies, there really are very few hills to get in the way...

I really don't like to see landscape images that have been 'tweaked', forced into un-natural colours and shadows by overactive computerating. The new enthusiam for HDR photography, for me at least, falls firmly in to this tweaking category. I hate it. Photographing the landscape around us can really present challenges to record everything we see, but resorting to computer software to solve them is not playing the game... Thats not to say that we shouldn't use computers though, shooting digitally necessitates development of the image on the PC - but like the old darkroom processes that preceded them, they can be applied sympathetically - or in total overkill mode. A good image is always made in the camera, never in the bowels of the PC...

I'm convinced that you don't have to travel far to find really strong images in the landscape. However, a change of scenery is always a good thing, and this site contains images from as far afield as Florida, Spain and the Canaries, Italy and Holland - I'll always have my camera with me on family holidays...

Thanks again for spending time with the images contained here - I hope you found something you like. If so, let me know through the contacts page or leave a Guestbook message. Even if you weren't impressed - let me know why - this game is all about learning...

Regards - and thanks
